Taking a commendable step towards reducing the rising expenditure of consumers, the Government of India has introduced 'Bharat Rice' at a subsidized rate of Rs 29 per kg. This decision has been taken in view of the 15 percent increase in retail prices of rice in the last year.

What is subsidized rice/ Bharat Rice? In what packing is it available?

This subsidized rice will be available in packaging of 5 and 10 kg. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal expressed the government's commitment to provide essential food items to the public at reasonable prices.

“When wholesale intervention was not benefiting many people, retail intervention under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF) was started,” Goyal told PTI, “which will benefit everyone.”

Where to buy 'Bharat Rice'?

100 mobile vans will sell 'Bharat Rice' as well as distribute 5 kg packs to five beneficiaries.

Food Corporation of India (FCI) will provide 5 lakh tonnes of rice to two cooperatives – National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation Limited (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumer Federation Limited (NCCF) – as well as retail chain Kendriya Bhandar in the first phase. These agencies will then pack this rice in 5 kg and 10 kg packs and retail it under the 'Bharat' brand through their outlets. Very soon this rice will be available for purchase on e-commerce platforms also.

Just to be aware, this is not the first initiative. The government had earlier launched 'Bharat Atta', which is sold at Rs 27.50 per kg, and 'Bharat Chana' which is sold at Rs 60 per kg, through the same agencies. Both the products have received good response and the same is expected for 'Bharat Rice'.
